Biography

John McQuillan was born in Stranraer on July 20th 1970 and started his senior career with his hometown team after being part of Dundee United’s victorious youth side in the prestigious Milk Cup in 1986.

After just a year at Stair Park, McQuillan returned to Tayside and crossed Sandeman Street to join Dundee FC to start an eight year stay at Dens Park.

Signed when Jocky Scott was in charge, McQuillan had to learn his trade in the youth and reserve teams and was finally given his first team debut by Gordon Wallace at home to Motherwell in the final game of the 1989/90 season after sitting on the bench at Easter Road the week before.

By then the Dark Blues had already been relegated but McQuillan started the first game of the following season away to Queen of the South in the Skol Cup and the first game of the league season at home to Partick Thistle five days later.

As the side coming down from the Premier Division, Dundee were favourites to win the First Division and go straight back up at the first attempt but by the end of the season finished an agonising third, one point behind promoted Airdrie in second and two points behind champions Falkirk.

McQullian made 13 appearances that season and scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw at Forfar and scored a brace at the same venue in the Forfarshire Cup Final which The Loons won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

The following season the Dark Blues made it second time lucky when they won the First Division title to return to the top flight and John became a first team regular and a key player, making 46 appearances, the second most of any Dee that campaign, to more than earn his winners medal.

John seemed to love scoring against Forfar as he netted the first of three goals that season in a 4-2 win at Station Park and in the penultimate game of the season, where promotion was secured, McQuillan scored the opener in a 3-1 win over their Angus neighbours in front of the Sportscence cameras.

John must also have loved the TV cameras as his other goal in the title winning campaign came in a famous 6-2 win at Partick Thistle in November and his celebration was part of the opening credits of Sportscene the following season when Dundee were back in the big time.

By then Simon Stainrod was in charge at Dens, having taken over from Iain Munro in February and despite overhauling the squad and brining in a host of international talent like Morten Weighorst and Dusan Vrto, McQuillan still retained his place and turned out 30 times as The Dee finished in 10th, five points above the drop.

Despite fighting to maintain their top flight for most of the campaign there a number of memorable results, including a 1-0 win at Tannadice in which John played in midfield.

Due to league reconstruction, three sides were due to be relegated the following season and the Dark Blues spent most of the season in the bottom three and eventually went down in their centenary season.

McQuillan made 39 appearances as The Dee finished bottom but was going to be a key player for manager Jim Duffy as the Dark Blues looked to bounce back at the first attempt.

However like McQuillan’s first full season in the side, the Dundee missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins, finishing one point behind champions Raith Rovers and one the same points but two goals behind Dunfermline in second, who went into the play off with Premier Division’s second bottom team Aberdeen.

Failure to get promotion obviously meant cost cutting and unfortunately McQuillan was one of those to leave and moved up the River Tay to Perth to join St Johnstone for the start of the 1995/96 season.

There he would win his second First Division title the following season and would spent six years at McDiarmid before joining his former youth team Dundee United for £50,000 in March 2000, weeks before the end of his contract.

Featuring as a first-choice in the remainder of that season, McQuillan played in fifteen matches the 2000/01 season before moving on loan to Alloa Athletic for the final months of the season and turning out eleven times for The Wasps.

McQuillan then started the 2001/02 season on loan at Montrose and in February 2002, made his loan spell permanent, going on to spend another two seasons at Links Park before playing his final match and hanging up his boots in May 2004.

At Dens he would turn out 168 times over an eight year period, scoring five times, the most important of which was the goal which sent Dundee back on their way to the Premier Division on that memorable day in May 1992.
