Biography

Born in Newbiggin on 18th July 1922, Ronnie was a centre-forward who joined Dundee during the war, turning out regularly in the East League during season 1944-45, having been signed from Jeanfield Swifts.

He scored a he staggering 39 goals in 34 games, but though a prolific scorer in that first season, he understandably never came close to matching that incredible total as football got back to normal after the war as these games were deemed as friendlies.

He was a member of the side that topped the 'B' Division two years running. There was no promotion in the first season after the war in which Turnbull only played 18 times, scoring seven goals.

The following season was the one that counted and Dundee, partly thanks to Turnbull's tally of 19 goals in 20 appearances, again topped the 'B' Division and gained promotion. Bert Juliussen and Ernie Ewen with 33 goals each respectively both outscored him though.

As it transpired, the forward's days at Dens were limited. That was probably as much because he thrived in his first taste of football in the top flight and after 12 goals in 17 games at the start of season 1947-48, he was transferred to Sunderland in November 1947.

When George Anderson had re-signed him the previous summer, it was on the understanding that if a suitable offer was made, he could return to his native north-east of England, and an £8,000.bid by Sunderland in November 1947 was deemed to fit the bill.

In a little under two years at Roker Park, he scored sixteen goals in forty appearances before moving on. Next port of call was Manchester City where he made 30 appearances, scoring five times in the league. In January 1951, he was transferred to Swansea and in the lower division scored 35 goals in 67 league appearances for the Welsh club.

Just before Dundee set off for their tour of South African in 1953, George Anderson again signed Turnbull, but his second spell was to be much less successful than his first. After nine goals from 23 outings, and reckoned to be past his best, Turnbull was put up for sale by new boss Willie Thornton at the end of season 1953-54 and after 60 appearances in which he scored 40 goals excluding the war years, he never again played for Dundee's first team.
