Biography

Paul McGowan progressed through the Celtic youth system, initially playing as a striker.

A loan spell to Greenock Morton allowed Paul to make his professional debut, and he scored 14 goals in 44 appearances as Morton won the Second Division Title.

Over the following three seasons Paul made only a handful of appearances for Celtic. The high point of his career in the green and white was arguably scoring a 91st minute equaliser as Celtic came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Rapid Vienna and Parkhead in December 2009.

Further loan spells followed, at Hamilton Academical and St Mirren, before Paul signed permanently for the latter in 2011.

At St Mirren, Paul was converted from a striker into an attacking midfielder by manager Danny Lennon. He was an influential player for the Buddies, making a total of 154 appearances for the club.

Paul played an important role in St Mirren’s League Cup campaign in 2012/2013, scoring a penalty against Celtic in the semi-final and being named Man of the Match in the 3-2 victory over Hearts in the final.

Paul signed for Dundee in the summer of 2014 after the expiry of his St Mirren contract. Playing predominantly as a central midfielder for the Dark Blues, Paul has been an influential player over the past six seasons, making over 200 appearances for the club. He was also handed the captaincy on a number of occasions last season, and scored goals in the victories against Ayr United, Dunfermline Athletic and Partick Thistle.

Despite the early end to the season due to COVID, Paul was awarded the Andrew De Vries Player of the Season Award and signed a one year contract extension to remain at Dens for the 2020/2021 season.

On the 8th January 2022, McGowan signed a new contract until the summer of 2023.

Unfortunately, McGowan's final year with the club would see him out injured for the majority of it, before being loaned out to Dunfermline, where he would help guide the Pars to the 1st Division title, meaning that he would win both the Championship and 1st Division in the same year.
