Biography

William Cowan Fotheringham was born in Larkhill and went on to play for Larkhill Thistle.

From there, he went on to sign for his local club Airdrieonians in August 1919. After two seasons with The Diamonds, he would make his way to Dens Park to sign for Dundee in 1921.

Willie would play 129 times for the Dee and in the process, he would keep 53 clean sheets.

He would make his competitive debut in August at home in a 1-1 draw and would keep his position between the sticks for 127 consecutive appearance before missing three matches before finally making his last few appearances for the club at the end of the 1923/24 season.

The widely popular 'keeper would find himself on the transfer list a would eventually move to Greenock Morton in September of that year for a deal worth £200.

While he was never selected for the national team, Fotheringham did play in an. International trial match between the 'Home Scots vs Anglo-Scots' in March of 1923. The match ended one-all.

After his spell with Morton, Willie enjoyed playing his trade with their rivals St Mirren before finishing his career with Queen of the South.

Fotheringham then went on to have a managerial career, taking over the reigns at St Mirren, Cowdenbeath and Airdrie.
