Biography

Sandy Macfarlane announced that he has secured the signature of William Duncan Cowan from Tranent Juniors during an interview with the Evening Telegraph on the 14th January 1920.

An Inside Forward, Cowan had built up a big reputation for himself in the East of Scotland junior circles.

It was hinted that he is a "second Bobby Walker," and Dundee were regarded as being exceedingly fortunate in securing his signature, for it was an open secret that he has been angled after by a good many Scottish League clubs.

Cowan had initially played for the Dundee 'A' side against Aberdeen's reserves in New Year's Day but his match was unfortunately halted due to an injury early on in the match.

He however, put in an excellent performance until his injury, which meant he had done enough for the Dundee officials to make their mind up to sign him.

In February 1923, he was selected by the Scottish League selection committee to play for Scotland against England in Newcastle but a few days prior to be the game, Cowan would miss out on his first cap due to an knee injury.

In June of that year, Cowan signed for Newcastle United for what was understood to have been for a considerable fee.

Injuries had hampered his progress in his last season with Dundee.

After a few season with Newcastle, where he was capped for Scotland, he moved to Manchester City for a season before moving back to Scotland with St Mirren and Peebles Rovers.

A move back down south to England was on the card and he played for Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet United), North Shields, Hartlepool, Darlington and Bath City.
