Biography

Born in Aberdeen in 1940, Alex Stuart was only 21 when he lifted the League Championship with Dundee Football Club in 1962. He was also the last of the squad who took that honour with the club to depart Dens Park and as such is the only player in Dundee history to win the league wearing Dark Blue before going on to represent the club in the European Cup semi-final, a Scottish Cup final and the Scottish League Cup final.

Unfortunately for the left back the latter three would all end in defeat as Dundee lost out to AC Milan 5-2 on aggregate in 1963, 3-1 to Rangers in 1964 and 5-3 to Celtic in the 1967/68 season respectively. However, that Stuart was a part of a team that evolved out of being league champions, but which could still regularly compete in domestic cup finals and semi-finals, while holding their own in Europe, should not be underestimated.

After eleven years at Dens Stuart made the short, if always controversial, trip across the street to join Dundee United. However after only three games and scoring one goal for the Tannadice club Stuart would head for pastures new once more.

A telephone call from Montrose FC to then United manager Jerry Kerr enquiring if the latter could recommend a young player-manager to take on that role at Links Park led to Kerr suggesting Stuart for the job and the defender became, at the time, Scotland’s youngest senior manager, aged just 29. After four years Stuart hung up his boots in 1973 but continued on as manager at Montrose for a further two seasons. Taking them to 3rd in the old First Division, only one place and five points away from promotion to the Premier League, with those times now being looked upon by many Montrose supporters as the club’s halcyon days.

Attracting the attention of top flight club Ayr United, Stuart moved to Somerset Park when their then manager Ally McLeod was asked to take the Scotland job. He would help the Honest Men to preserve their top flight status for a couple of seasons but after relegation in 1977/78 Stuart would leave and take the top job at Muirton Park - the ground where he, as a player, achieved his greatest triumph with Dundee, when they beat St Johnstone 3-0 in 1962 to clinch the league title.

Stuart’s two years in Perth would prove to be difficult, with St Johnstone narrowly avoiding relegation to the Second Division (the lowest rung of Scottish professional football at the time) in both campaigns. This would be followed by a brief spell at the helm of Finnish side Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur which would be the last managerial appointment of Alex Stuart’s respected career in football.

Recognised as the club’s highest scoring out and out defender with 31 goals Alex Stuart was inducted into the Dundee Football Club Hall of Fame in 2017 with a Golden Era Award.
