Biography

A cult hero in every sense; Gary Harkins was a Dundee fan favourite across three spells as a player.

After learning his trade at Blackburn Rovers, Gary made a name for himself at Partick Thistle under Ian McColl.

Gary was converted from a defender to an attacking midfielder at Firhill, and netted 11 goals in 42 appearances in 2008/2009. This form prompted Dundee to pay £150,000 to secure Gary’s services.
Jocky Scott built his team around Harkins, and fellow marquee signing Leigh Griffiths – a £100,000 signing from Livingston – with the aim of securing promotion to the top flight.

Driving forward from midfield, Gary finished the season as the Dees top scorer in the league, netting 15 times. Gary also scored in the Challenge Cup final, as the Dundee came back from two goals down to beat Inverness 3-2, his first career silverware.

Despite this, poor form in the second half of the season lead to Jocky Scott’s dismissal as manager, and Dundee lost out on promotion to Inverness. Gary was made captain under Jocky’s successor, Gordon Chisolm, in one of the most difficult seasons in Dundee’s history.

Plunged into administration and docked 25 points, a number of players were released as the club fought for survival on and off the pitch. Manager Gordon Chisolm and his assistant Billy Dodds were let go, leaving Barry Smith in charge.

On the pitch, Gary led the threadbare Dees on a record unbeaten run, as Dundee overcame the points deduction to ensure league survival. Gary netted 5 times, including a free kick in the 2-1 victory over Raith Rovers at Dens in February 2011, a result which sparked pandemonium amongst the fans and lifted Dundee off the foot of the table for the first time since entering administration.

With Dundee’s future secure, Gary signed for top flight club Kilmarnock in the summer of 2011, helping the Ayrshire club lift the League Cup, in a 1-0 victory over Celtic. After falling out of favour under Kenny Shiels, Gary returned to Dens for a second spell in January 2013.

Having replaced Rangers in the top flight, Dundee were struggling at the foot of the table. Barry Smith was replaced by John ‘Bomber’ Brown, and the new arrivals helped galvanise the team. Gary netted a brace in a 2-1 victory over former employers Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, a result which contributed to Killie finishing outside the top six.

However, Dundee’s relegation was later confirmed after a home draw against Aberdeen in May 2013.

After spells at St Mirren and Oldham Athletic, Gary returned for a third spell at Dens in the summer of 2014, as Paul Hartley rebuilt the squad for top flight football following promotion. A regular in the Dundee midfield during the following two seasons, Gary made 66 appearances, scoring 9 times.

The midfielder was a popular figure in the dressing room; after scoring in a 3-1 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park his RKO celebration with Jim McCallister went viral, prompting a response from WWE superstar Randy Orton.

Gary also drew national attention for comments about Rangers being a ‘new club’ in the build up to a Scottish Cup tie in 2016, which brought a statement from the Ibrox club asking their fans to ‘treat the ill-informed with silent contempt’!

Since leaving Dens in the summer of 2016, Gary had spells at a number of clubs, before joining former teammate Gary Irvine for a speel as Player-Coach at Forfar Athletic in 2021.
