Biography

Paul McGinn’s footballing family includes Grandfather Jack, a former Chairman of Celtic and President of the SFA, alongside older brother Stephen and younger brother John. All three have played for Hibernian and St Mirren during their careers, while both Stephen and Paul enjoyed spells with Dundee.

Paul began his footballing career at Queen’s Park, however his was a football debut to forget. Introduced from the bench in the 56th minute against Raith Rovers, the 18-year-old was red carded in the 90th minute during a 1-0 win for the Kirkcaldy outfit.

Despite this setback, the youngster established himself as the first choice right back for the Spiders making 78 appearances for Scotland’s oldest football club in the Third Division. Paul’s form attracted the interest of St Mirren, who signed the defender in September 2012. Unable to play for the Saints due to his amateur status, Paul was loaned back to Queen’s Park, and then Dumbarton, and signed permanently for the latter in 2013.

A consistent performer during his time with the Sons, Paul was in the Dumbarton team that finished 5th in the 2013/2014 season. Paul was also on the pitch during Dumbarton’s 2-1 defeat to Dundee at Dens in May 2014, which secured the Scottish Championship title for Dundee.

Dundee gaffer Paul Hartley recognised Paul’s potential, and the defender signed a two-year deal in June 2014. Dundee signed a number of players from the lower leagues, who Paul Hartley identified as having the characteristics to cope with the rigours of top flight football.

Paul immediately made the right back berth his own, appearing for the first time in a comprehensive League Cup defeat of Peterhead in August 2014.

The defender made 39 appearances for the club in all competitions during his first season at Dens.

An energetic right back, Paul also chipped in with goals in a 4-0 hammering of Raith Rovers in the next round of the League Cup, and a 1-0 league victory over Motherwell.

The defender helped Dundee secure their highest league finish for more than a decade.

Paul remained the first choice right back in 2015/2016, and found the net in a 5-0 rout of his former club Dumbarton in February 2016.

The defender assisted Greg Stewart for Dundee’s first goal in a 4-0 rout of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in the first league game of the season, and provided 8 assists in all competitions during the season from right back.

However, Dundee were unable to build on their form in the previous season, finishing a disappointing 8th in the league. Paul left Dundee at the end of his contract to sign for Chesterfield, before returning to Scotland for spells with Partick Thistle, St Mirren, Hibernia and Motherwell, and made his full Scotland debut in 2021.
