Biography

Greg Stewart successfully overcame early adversity to forge a career as a professional.

Having been released from the academies of Rangers and then Hearts before the age of 16, Greg spent a year out of the game before signing for Falkirk junior side Syngenta in 2007.

The youngster caught the eye of
Cowdenbeath manager Jimmy Nichol, and he signed for the Fife club in 2010, aged 20.

In Greg’s first season in the professional ranks, he finished as Cowdenbeath’s top scorer with 9 goals, and scored 40 times in 140 appearances for the Fife club. The forward also struck up a great understanding with future Dundee teammate Kane Hemmings.

Greg’s form for Cowdenbeath attracted the interest of a number of clubs, and Dundee won the race for his signature on a pre-contract agreement in April 2014. Greg was one of a number of signings made by Paul Hartley, to prepare the club for life back in the topflight, and instantly established himself as the focal point of Dundee’s attack.

Playing in a front two with David Clarkson, Greg finished as Dundee’s top scorer with 15 goals in 39 games, his first season of top flight football.

The following season Dundee recruited Kane Hemmings, Greg’s strike partner from their time at Cowdenbeath, and the two combined to devastating effect in the top flight. Greg hit 11 goals and provided 9 assists in 42 appearances for the Dees.

Dundee fans will recall Greg’s standout performance in a match with Ross County in April 2016. The forward tormented the County defence all afternoon, and struck twice for Dundee in a 5-2 victory. Greg also provided the assist for Craig Wighton’s winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Dundee United, which consigned Dundee’s city rivals to relegation.

Having rejected a new contract at Dundee, Greg entered his third season at Dundee attracting interest from a number of clubs. Birmingham City won the race for his signature, paying Dundee around £500,000 for the forward.

Greg failed to establish himself at Birmingham, and returned to Scotland on loan to Aberdeen (twice) and Kilmarnock, before signing for Rangers on a free transfer. Greg was part of the Rangers side that lifted the League Title for the first time since 2011

Following his departure from the Glasgow club, Stewart signed for Indian Super League side, Jamshedpur.
