Biography

Defender Julen Etxabeguren came through the youth ranks at Real Sociedad. Julen failed to break into the first team, however made a number of appearances for the Real Sociedad B team between 2010 and 2014.

Julen was also named in Real Sociedad’s Champions League squad for the 2013/2014 season, however following an injury he decided to give up on football.

While completing a Master’s degree in electrical engineering at the University of Edinburgh, Julen signed for East Fife in December 2014.

After a number of impressive performances for the Methil based club, Julen was snapped up by Dundee on a three-year deal in June 2015.

The defender was a regular in the Dundee team under Paul Hartley, making 48 appearances for the club over the following 2 seasons.

Julen scored his only goal for the club in Dundee’s 7-0 victory over Forfar Athletic in the 2016/2017 League Cup Group Stage.

Julen suffered a serious injury to his Achilles tendon in a 1-0 defeat to Partick Thistle, and was out for 7 months. While on the treatment table, Paul Hartley was replaced by Neil McCann, and when Julen returned to the squad in October 2017 he found first team opportunities limited.

Julen’s final appearance for Dundee came from the bench in a 2-0 victory over St Johnstone in December 2017.

The defender dislocated his shoulder in training in February 2018, and was released by Dundee at the end of the season.

After leaving Dundee, Julen returned to Spain to sign for Real Union then Beasain.
