Biography

James McPake came through the youth ranks at Livingston, and made his debut for the club aged 19 in a 3-1 defeat to Hibernian in April 2004.

A loan spell at Greenock Morton aided his development, and he was appointed club captain at Livingston aged just 23.

James’ leadership qualities have been recognised at every club he has played for, and he has also held the captain’s armband at Hibs and Dundee.

James’ performances for Livingston attracted the interest of several clubs, and he was snapped up by Coventry City in February 2009. Injury problems prevented James from establishing himself in the English Championship, and he returned to Scotland to sign for Hibs, initially on a six month loan deal, in January 2012.

James was a consistent performer in what was a very poor Hibs side that lost consecutive Scottish Cup Finals in 2012 and 2013, and was relegated to the Championship via the playoffs in 2014.

The defender scored Hibs consolation goal in the humiliating 5-1 defeat to Hearts in the 2012 final, while injury kept him out of Hibs’ 3-0 defeat to Celtic the following year. After returning from injury, James was frozen out of the Hibs side under Terry Butcher as the team lurched towards the drop zone.

Released by Hibs in May 2014, Paul Hartley brought the defender to Dens Park on a two-year deal. A towering presence at the back for Dundee, James made 38 appearances for the club in his first season, scoring goals in a 1-1 draw against Celtic, and a 3-1 victory over Dundee United at Dens. This was Dundee’s first competitive derby victory for over 10 years.

James’ performances helped Dundee to secure a top-six finish on their return to the Premiership.

James continued to be a stand-out performer for Dundee the following season, making 17 appearances and scoring twice, including a last minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Dundee United at Tannadice. This goal sparked wild celebrations amongst the Dundee fans.

James’ season was brought to a bitter end, after he was stretchered off with a fractured kneecap in a 2-1 victory over Dundee United in January 2016. James battled valiantly to return to fitness, however the injury eventually forced his retirement from playing in February 2018.

During his rehabilitation from injury James took on coaching duties, and was given a full-time position in the Dundee academy in 2018.

James’ hard work behind the scenes did not go unnoticed, and he was asked to take charge of the team for the remaining games of the 2018/2019 season, following the dismissal of Jim McIntyre.

James was appointed permanent manager in May 2019.

In May 2021, James secured Dundee’s promotion back to the Premiership via the playoffs, following a 4-2 aggregate victory over Kilmarnock, and won the Championship Manager of the Year Award.
