Biography

Herbert C. Dainty began his career with his local side in Northamptonshire, Kettering Town.

In 1899, he joined Leicester Fosse who are now known as Leicester City. Dainty became a prominent figure for the club, quickly gaining the reputation of being one of the best centre halves in the Second Division of the English League

With the formation of Brighton Tower Club, he accepted a handsome contract to join them where he was joined by two well-known Dundonians, Frank Barrett and Bob Petrie

After only one season, he was back at Leicester Fosse where he produced the same performances as he did during his first spell.

Dainty was on the move yet again, this time to Notts County were he yet again proved invaluable to any team he played for with excellent performances at right half-back.

Again, like all his clubs before, after only one season, he was on the move yet again, thia time joining Southampton who were Southern League Champions at the time.

Eventually, he made his way up to Scotland to sign for Dundee and it's here where he would spend the last time of his career with one club.

Upon signing, the Evening Telegraph reporter gave the Dark Blue fans a brief description of Dainty:

"Perhaps the most prominent feature of his play is the surprising height at which he can reach the ball with his head, as time and again he will get the sphere away from players inches taller than himself."

In his six season with Dundee, Dainty scored an impressive 25 goals in 211 games as a defender, which would make him one of Dundee's highest scoring defenders for the club.

Dainty was one of the first names on the team sheets each week and rarely missed a game for the Dee.

Twice while with Dundee, Herbert found himself finishing runner-up in the League and twice it was Celtic that pipped him to the title.

In 1906-07, Dundee finished 7 points behind the Glasgow side and in 1908-09, it was just one agonising point this time.

He would taste success with the club and the following season, Dundee would lift the Scottish Cup after a third replay with Clyde to deem the winners.

The following season would be his last with Dundee and he was announced as Leicester Fosse's new player-manager in March 1911 but the day after, the Dundee directors denied any knowledge of Dainty leaving for Fosse and it was reminded that any attempt to sign approach a player without consent during the season was serious infringement of the rules.

Dainty would also come out to deny this story.

He would leave Dundee however and it was to Bradford Park Avenue for a fairly high price which Dainty received a fair share of.

The day before signing for Bradford, Dainty was in Ireland speaking to Belfast Distillery about becoming their player-manager but negotiations fell through on the eleventh hour.

After a few season with Bradford, Dainty moved to Ayr United in October 1913 where he became increasingly popular with the players and when the first ever managers job at Somerset Park opened up, he beat 17 other applicants to the job to take up the post in May 1914.

In 1915, Dundee Hibs paid a club record fee and the highest ever paid by a Second Division club in Scotland for Dainty to become their player-manager, with their current manager Pat Reilly brokering the deal as he prepares to become club secretary.

They beat off Hibs who were also prepared to meet the transfer fee for Dainty.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Dainty's time in charge would entirely be played in the Eastern Division.

During this time, there wasn't a lot of games in the division so Dainty began organising games in aid of worthy charities and organisations such and the Red Cross and Prison aid of such worthy and important organisations like the Red Cross and the Prison of War Benefit Appeal.

He called his team the 'Dainty's XI' and arranged matches for his select teams of professional players against any available positions.

He stepped down as manager but continued playing for Dundee Hibs before joining their board in 1920 and then Club Chairman in 1922.

Dainty ran a business in Dundee at 51-53 Commercial Street, now Tickety Boos.
