Biography

Sandy MacFarlane who is a legendary figure in the annals of Dundee FC with a career that spanned over a quarter of a century as both a player from 1901 to 1913 and twice as manager between the Wars. His time at Dens Park saw him win eight international honours, finish Scottish League Championship runner-up three times and was a key figure in Dundee’s 1910 Scottish Cup win.

Alexander MacFarlane was born in Airdrie in 1878 and began his career with his home town team Airdrieonians with whom he enjoyed two spells between 1895 and 1898. In between times Sandy turned out seven times for Woolwich Arsenal but it was his second move south of the border that proved more successful when he joined Newcastle United in 1898 where he made 86 appearances and scored 17 times.

In 1901 the clever inside-forward signed for Dundee and he would go on to make 333 appearances for the Dark Blues, scoring 71 times in over a decade of dedicated play.

Signed in November, Sandy made his debut at home to Celtic and by the end of the season had turned out nine times as Dundee finished a disappointing second bottom with thirteen points. Expansion to Division One meant that Dundee didn’t have to apply for re-election and in the new twelve team top tier, Dundee managed a remarkable turnaround by finishing second behind champions Hibernian who they knocked out in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup.

Unfortunately Hearts knocked Dundee out in the semi-final after a replay with Sandy playing in all 28 league and cup matches scoring five times in his first full season. Dundee did however win both the Forfarshire Cup and Dewar Shield to give Sandy his first winners’ medals and he would win the Forfarshire Cup a further three times as a player and once as manager.

In 1904 Dens Park hosted its first full international when Scotland played Wales in a British International Championship match and Sandy made his Scotland debut in the 1-1 draw. When Dens hosted its second international four years later, also against Wales, Sandy was again in the line-up and he would win five full caps and three Scottish League caps over a seven year period while at Dundee.

In March 1909 Sandy scored his first international goal in a 5-0 win over Northern Ireland at Ibrox and thirteen months later, Ibrox was again the scene of celebration for Sandy when he was part of Dundee’s Scottish Cup winning side after they beat Clyde 2-1 in a second replay. Having finished as League Championship runners-up in both 1907 and 1909, Dundee finally managed to win their first piece of silverware with that Scottish Cup victory and the sturdy inside-forward played in all three Final ties.

It was a night to remember for all concerned with Dundee and in a marathon ten games to win the trophy, Dundee were watched by a whopping 214,000 fans on the road to glory. It proved a real money spinner for the Club and Sandy and the players received a healthy bonus of £40 per man.

Sandy played for Dundee for another three years and was part of the side that went on an incredible 39-game unbeaten run at home between 1908 and 1911. He left for Stamford Bridge in 1913 but returned to Dens Park after the First World War to become the Club’s first full time manager.

Dundee had gone into abeyance towards the end of the conflict and when they returned for the 1919/20 season, Scottish Cup winning manager William Wallace announced his resignation and Sandy was invited to take up the Dens Park hot seat.

Unlike his predecessor, MacFarlane would be full-time and faced a daunting task of re-establishing the Dark Blues amongst Scotland’s elite but in his first three seasons, The Dee finished a credible fourth.

In 1923 Sandy led Dundee on their first overseas tour when a lengthy boat journey took them to Spain where they won four of their seven matches.

Amongst those wins was a 2-0 triumph over Real Madrid and with the tour being deemed a great success, Dundee returned to Spain the following year. The time Dundee enjoyed two victories over Barcelona with 2-0 and 2-1 wins and became therefore the first non-Spanish side to defeat both Real Madrid and Barcelona on their own patches.

It was of course the Roaring Twenties but when the Dark Blues failed to roar onto any tangible success, MacFarlane resigned after a poor start to the 1924/25 season. At the end of the campaign, the side which Sandy had built reached the Scottish Cup Final against Celtic but two late goals form ‘The Bhoys’ cancelled out Dundee’s half-time lead to lift the trophy.

Just over two years later in October 1927, MacFarlane returned to Dens Park for a second spell in charge but his renewed love affair with Dundee proved to be short lived when he resigned the following May following a disappointing run of form. He did however enjoy a Scottish Cup victory over Dundee United in the clubs first ever national cup competition meeting with a 1-0 win at Dens in a replay after a 3-3 draw at Tannadice.

Sandy MacFarlane gave 18 years loyal service to Dundee Football Club and as The Dee’s first full-time manager and as a member of the 1910 Scottish Cup winning side, he joined the Club’s Hall of Fame with a Heritage Award in 2015.
