Biography

Born in Falkirk in 1939, George McGeachie signed for Dundee as a 17 year old, making his debut for first team not long after. The left winger would, however, stay part time throughout his football career, gaining a degree in science as he played for The Dee, before becoming a school teacher.

A regular in the Dundee team from the 57/58 season onwards, McGeachie would find his playing time limited by the arrival of the likes of Gordon Smith and Bobby Waddell as Dundee lifted the Championship trophy in 1962.

McGeachie would take a job with ICI in Billingham during 1964, allowing Darlington to sign the wide man from Dundee for a fee said to be “considerably less than £4000” and he’d go on to make 135 appearances for The Quakers, scoring nine goals.

Unfortunately an operation couldn’t prevent McGeachie’s playing days coming to an end due to a serious cartilage injury sustained in 1966. A condition that would go on to earn the ex-footballer the nickname ‘Creaky McGeachie’ when he was manager at the ICI nylon plant in Wilton after his playing days came to an end.
