Biography

Snubbed by both Dundee teams at an early age, Charlie Adam wasn't short of suitors and had the likes of Rangers, Celtic and Manchester City enquiring about him.

Eventually, he choose Rangers and would work his way up their youth academy before breaking into the first-team and making his debut against Livingston in April 2004.

Loan spells at Ross County in 2004-05 followed where he was part of the losing side in that seasons Challenge Cup Final.

The following year however, he was back again in the final of the same competition with St Mirren where he would pick up a winners medal and also, a First Division winners medal by helping the Buddies win promotion to the top flight.

The next season seen him make a proper breakthrough into the Rangers team, playing 28 times, scoring 8 times and being voted Young Player of the Year by the fans.

Charlie would only feature 16 times the following season but would sign a five-year deal with the club. He played his part in reaching the 2008 Uefa Cup final but would be an unused substitute for that match.

He would also find himself suspended for the League Cup Final victory over Dundee United that season and then would fail to make the squad for the Scottish Cup Final against Queen of the South.

At the start of 2009, Adam found himself on-loan down at Blackpool where he would kick-start his career, that's even with being sent off on his debut for the Seasiders!

Charlie made that much of an impression with Tony Pulis - including the winner in the West Lancashire derby - that in August that year, they paid a club record £500,000 to make his move to England permanent.

He would have an outstanding season to lead Blackpool to the Play-Offs and would even score the match winning penalty in the Semi-Final vs Nottingham Forest to send them to the Final. In the Final, Adam would play a major part by slotting home a sublime free-kick as his club went onto to win the tie 3-2 and a place in the Premiership.

Blackpool, however, would only be in the Premiership for one season before being relegated back to the Championship. Adam still managed to find his name on the nominees for the PFA Players' Player of the Year and make a big money move to Liverpool for £6.75 million.

He lasted only one season at Anfield but still managed to play in over 70% of their matches that season.

He found himself on the winning team in the League cup final - despite missing a penalty in the shoot out - but would miss the FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea through injury.

In August 2012, he would move to Stoke City on a four-year deal where he would become a fans favorite and make over 190 appearances, the majority of them in the English top-flight.

After relegation in the 2017/18 season, Charlie remained at stoke but rarely featured and in 2019, he joined Reading on a one-year deal.

Then in September 2020, Charlie Adam made the trip back to his home city to sign a two-year deal with his club, Dundee.

He played 29 times, scoring 6 goals in the shortened season due to covid-19 but he played a major part in the club finishing 2nd and reaching the play-off final where we beat Kilmarnock to claim our place in the Scottish Premiership.

His performances that season earned him the Championship Player of the Year award for 2020-21.

After leaving Dundee at the end of the 2021-22 season, Adam retired on the 21st September 2022.
