Biography
Hailing from Nottingham, Ben Hutchinson's performances for Arnold Town in the FA Youth Cup in 2005/06 saw him watched by numerous scouts and after scoring four goals in the 7–1 win over Dunston, Middlesbrough completed his signing in the January 2006 transfer window ended with the deal was worth up to £100,000 based on appearances.
Hutchinson established himself in the Under-18 side before going on loan to Billingham Synthonia where he scored seven goals in 14 appearances in the Northern League. After starting 2007/08 with the Boro reserves, and scoring three goals in three games, he was promoted to the first team squad for the League Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur but was an unused substitute.
Injuries to most of the first team strike force saw him make his first senior Middlesbrough appearance in the Premier League game away at Manchester City on October 7th 2007, after coming on as substitute for Tom Craddock. He marked his debut with a goal in the final minutes of the match, though it was only a consolation goal as the team went down to a 3–1 defeat and came off the bench again against Manchester United the following week.
Ben made his first start as a lone striker in January 2008 at Bristol City in the FA Cup third round but a substitute appearance in the Premier League against Liverpool the following week was his last run out for the Teesiders.
At the end of the month Hutchinson signed a pre contract agreement with Celtic to join them at the start of the 2008/09 season but an deal was struck between the clubs for Ben to move permanently to Celtic Park with £350,000 going to the Riverside.
Two weeks later Hutchinson made his Celtic debut when he came off the bench to replace Scott McDonald in a 3-0 home win over Hearts. Ben had to wait until April for his second Celtic appearance, again as a substitute, this time in a 1-0 home defeat to Motherwell.
The following season Hutchinson made just four substitute appearances for The Hoops but these did include an Old Firm game and against Manchester United in the Champions League.
On August 2009, Hutchinson joined Swindon Town on loan until January along with Celtic teammate Simon Ferry and scored his first goal for Swindon in October in a 3–2 victory away at Brentford. Unfortunately that would be his only goal in 13 appearances before returning to Parkhhead just after Christmas.
At the end of the transfer window Hutchinson was out on loan again when he was brought to Dens Park by Jocky Scott to help shoot the Dark Blues back to the Premier League.
He made debut against Ayr United in the Scottish Cup and playing alongside Leigh Griffiths, scored the opener in the 2-1 win.
Ben would make ten appearances for The Dee, scoring again in the league against Ross County in Dingwall in March but he was part of the Dundee side to let slip a 15 point lead at the top of the First Division and finish as runners-up to Inverness Caledonian Thistle where “second was nowhere.”
Ben returned to the east end of Glasgow for pre season but in August, signed for Lincoln City as part of former Celtic player Chris Sutton's revolution at Sincil Bank. He scored on his League Two debut against Chesterfied but his early promise failed to continue and he ended up as a squad player involved in the team's relegation from the Football League.
Hutchinson finally left Celtic on a free transfer in the summer of 2011 and signed for Kilmarnock on a six-month deal. He scored his first goal for Kilmarnock in a 5–0 win over League Cup third round match against Queen of the South but unable to establish himself in the team because of injury and Paul Heffernan's good form, he left the club at the end of his contract.
On January 1st 2012, Hutchinson moved to Mansfield Town on a free transfer, signing a contract until the end of the season, in the hope of getting his career back on track. He earned a new contract with the Blue Square Premier side at the end of the season and after two-and-a-half years with The Stags Hutchinson left Field Mill after nine goals in 44 appearances.
Since then Hutchinson has bounced around the English non-league with Nuneaton Town, Basford United, Belper Town and Carlton Town in the Northern Premier League.
