Biography

Gordon Smith could be seen as something of a talisman, being the only player to hold the distinction of winning the Scottish League title with three different teams, none of which reside in Glasgow.

Born in Edinburgh in 1924, Smith would learn his trade in Angus with Montrose Roselea, before moving on to Dundee North End. Growing up a Hearts supporter ‘Gay Gordon’ (a nickname that had a much different meaning at the time) would instead sign for Hibernian in 1941, quite amazingly scoring a hat-trick on his debut against no less an opponent than Heart of Midlothian themselves, as Hibs ran out 5-3 winners.

Smith would win an amazing three league titles with the Easter Road side, with winner’s medals claimed in 1948, 1951 and 1952, while also earning a Scottish Cup runners up medal in 1947 while wearing the green and white of Hibernian.

With a recurring ankle injury limiting Smith’s games time Hibernian released a player who had been one of their ‘Famous Five’ frontline alongside Bobby Johnstone, Eddie Turnbull, Lawrie Reilly and future Scotland manager Willie Ormond.

The player himself, however, paid for an operation on the offending ankle, which allowed him to cross the capital and sign for his boyhood heroes Hearts. Glory also awaited the wonderfully talented ball player at Tynecastle Park, with Smith’s amazing ability to beat a player and find a team-mate’s head with his crosses key as Hearts not only won the league but also the League Cup in 1959/60.

Ankle injuries would plague Smith once more and after his second season with Hearts he would once again be put out to pasture with many writing off any possibilities of Smith’s career continuing. Dundee were the club to dispel that belief and his major role in feeding Alan Gilzean with goal scoring opportunities can’t be underestimated as Smith, at the ripe old age of 38, won the fifth Championship medal of his career and this time with his third different club.

By this stage Smith’s ball skills and close control were the thing of legend, with Dundee goalkeeper from the title winning team, Pat Liney, remembering Smith, after the ‘keeper had saved a crucial penalty against St Mirren on the penultimate weekend of the season, beating the entire St Mirren team on his way up the park only to realise that his team-mates were all still congratulating the goalie, so he beat them all again as he brought the ball back into the Dundee half!

A sensation as The Dens Men took on the champions of Germany, The Netherlands and Portugal and came out on top during the 1962/63 European Cup campaign that ended, controversially, at the hands of AC Milan, Smith would leave Dundee at the end of the 1963/64 season and is still the oldest outfield player in the club’s history at age 39. Briefly playing with Morton and then Irish Club Drumcondra, the football maestro would retire just a few days shy of his 40th birthday and go on to own The Right Wing (his position on the football field) pub in Edinburgh.

Smith would die in August 2004, aged 80. In a glittering career where he was revered at every club he graced with his skills he would win 5 Championship winner’s medals, one League Cup gong, and a Scottish Cup runner’s up medal. Also managing the feat with Hibernian in 1955/56, Smith would also play in two European Cup semi-finals, earn 32 Scotland caps, scoring four times, while also being selected 11 times for the Scottish League Select XI.

Therefore it will be a surprise to no one that Gordon Smith has been inducted into the Hall Of Fame of both Hibernian and Dundee Football Club, having played exactly 100 times for the latter, scoring 19 goals along the way.
