Biography

The defender arrived at Dens towards the end of a long career that encompassed ten years with St Mirren; five seasons with Aberdeen during which he had a spell on loan to Middlesbrough, and a term at Tynecastle.

It was from Hearts that he was signed by Jim Duffy at the beginning of the 1996-97 campaign. Although he was only to spend one season at Dens, Dave was very much a regular in the side.

After making his debut in a Coca-Cola Cup tie against Airdrie in August, he was rarely missing from the defence as The Dee just failed to return to the Premier Division, finishing third behind Airdrie and St Johnstone. The last of his 31 appearances was on the final day of the season at Forthbank, Stirling. He scored once in 7-1 hammering of East Fife at Methil, just before Christmas.

Released at the end of the season, he moved back to his first club St Mirren with whom he had won a Scottish Cup winners medal in 1987 when Saints beat Dundee United and had been capped once at Under-21 level.

After a decade at Love Street, he moved to Pittodrie. He played a matter of only 13 games for Hearts before his season at Dens and added 24 appearances to his previous Paisley aggregate of 182 in which he had scored six goals.

After fifteen games with Ayr in 1998-99, he moved to Iceland and it turned out to be a very successful move as the Scottish defender went on to pick up the Icelandic Player of the Year award, along with two league championship and cup medals in as many years before moving on to Canberra, Australia to play in the NSL for a season.

Back in Iceland, he was given his first taste of management with KR Reykjavik, being appointed assistant under former Anderlecht and Feyenoord player Petur Petursson. The Scot had previously helped Reykjavik to the Icelandic title under Atli Edvaldsson.

In June 2002, he returned to Scotland and was appointed manager of Dumbarton in June after having returning to Scotland to be the Youth Academy coach at Livingston. His tenure with the Sons lasted just nine months, vacating the manager's job.
