Biography

'Cowboy' joined the club in a transfer deal that saw Peter Mackie go in the other direction to Love Street.

A rugged central defender who began his career with Clydebank in 1976, he moved to St Mirren in 1980, making over 100 league appearances for the Buddies.

His Dark Blue debut came in a 3- 2 defeat by Aberdeen and he scored his first of nine goals against Celtic, although it ended in a 3-2 defeat against the Glasgow club.

John went on to captain the club under Archie Knox.

His final appearance for the club was in that league decider against Hearts in the final game of season 1985-86.

He made a total of seventy-three appearances for the club before being released in 1986.

He moved to Airdrie, playing 44 league games in two years at Broomfield, finishing the 1987-88 season at Firhill playing 19 games for The Jags before hanging up his boots.

He came back to the club during the nineties as a coach and was assistant to Jim Duffy when he left for Easter Road in 1995, stepping up to take charge.

After steering the club to the top of the First Division the season after, he was then sacked from the club in February of 1997. He took over the manager's position of Queens Park and led the amateur club to the Third Division title in his first season. He also went on to manage Bellshill Athletic, Albion Rovers and Clyde.
