Born in Watford on 26 March 1966, the tall blonde defender's first club was Norwich City, but having failed to make his mark there, he was signed by Archie Knox in 1985.
John made his debut in the 1-0 home win over Dumbarton at Dens in April 1985, but it was the only game he was to start. After coming off the bench in the following two games, he appeared just twice more the following season, again both from the bench with the last of his five first team games coming in a 1-1 draw with Hearts at Tynecastle in October 1985.
John would then join Dunfermline the following season. Having made just two appearances for the Pars, he spent the remainder of that season with Stenhousemuir and part of 1987-88 at Ochilview. For the Warriors, he played a total of 22 games scoring his only goals in British senior football, totalling six for the Second Division side before emigrating to Australia.
