Biography
Born 12th February 1946 in Dennyloanhead, Alex is perhaps better known as a manager than for his playing career. That is certainly the case as far as the left-back's career at Dens is concerned.
Alex had the unenviable job of under-studying Bobby Cox and as a result, managed a mere 11 appearances, with them all coming during the 1964-65 season.
The defender made his debut in a famous League Cup tie against Motherwell at Dens. Because Dundee were out of the reckoning as far as winning the section was concerned, Bob Shankly rang the changes which included debuts for Ally Donaldson, John Phillips and Jocky Scott as well as Totten as Dundee won 6-0.
Freed at the end of that season, the Dennylaanhead defender went on to play for Dunfermline, Falkirk, Queen of the South and Alloa Athletic. It was with Wasps that he stepped into management, which saw him go to be at the helm of Falkirk, Dunbarton, St Johnstone, East Fife, Kilmarnock and Falkirk whom he went on to serve as Director of Football.
