Biography

Harley only spent one season at the club. Signed for £12,000 in November 1964 by Shankly under whom he had played with Third Lanark, the centre-forward only managed ten games for Dundee, though he did briefly hint at his prolific scoring ability by netting a hat-trick against Airdrie at Dens in a 4-0 win in December 1964. But he was to score only one more goal-in a 1-1 home draw with Morton at Dens a week later and after a 4-0 defeat by Rangers at Ibrox early in 1965, he was never again to be seen in Dundee's first team colours and was released at the end of the season.

Previously, he played for Third Lanark, Manchester City and Birmingham before coming to Dens, he was seen by Shankly as a possible successor to Alan Gilzean who was on the point of leaving Dens. Unfortunately, his signing proved to be one of Shankly's few errors of judgement.

Harley went onto play with Irish side Portadown for a short spell before sadly dying two years later at the very early age of 30.
