Biography

One of three brothers to make a mark on the senior game, George Ryden made his debut for Dundee in a 1-0 win against Kilmarnock at Dens Park on October 20th, 1962. It would be just over a month before the tall blonde player would feature again but when he did on December 1st the same year, he took his place in a Dundee side that romped to a 10-2 home victory against Queen of the South.

Those were the first of 10 appearances the defender would make for Dundee in the 62/63 season and while he wouldn’t manage to force his way into the club’s legendary European Cup campaign after they had won the league the previous season, he did make a strong enough impression to cement his place in the team for the following term. This allowed Ryden to become a key component in the Dundee side that would go all the way to the Scottish Cup Final in 1964 where they would lose out to two late goals from Rangers in a 3-1 defeat. Although arguably, it is the photo of Ryden and guitar-totting teammate Hugh Robertson with The Beatles in the Caird Hall, Dundee that has proved to be the most enduring moment of the popular player’s career.

Ryden would begin to slip out of favour the next season, although he did represent the club in the European Cup Winner’s Cup in the second leg of the second round match in Spain against Real Zaragoza. However, after just six appearances in the 65/66 season the defender would be on his way to Perth. There he would spend three seasons with St Johnstone before a brief spell with Stirling Albion in the 1969/70 season would bring down the curtain on his playing career.

One of five brothers - two of which would play at a high level in Junior Football - George’s elder sibling John would play for Alloa, Accrington Stanley, Tottenham Hotspur and Watford, while his younger brother Hugh would represent Bristol Rovers, Stockport County, Chester City and Halifax Town. Between them they would leave a legacy that few other football families could ever hope to match.
