Biography

An inside forward who joined the club at the beginning of the 1954-55 season from Clydebank Juniors, Joe was having to follow in the footsteps of the legendary and recently departed Billy Steel, which was a hard act to follow for the most accomplished of players, never mind one plucked by manager Willie Thornton from the Junior ranks.

He made his debut against Hearts at Tynecastle in the opening fixture of the League Cup competition that season and scored the first of his five goals on his home debut as Dundee beat Celtic 3-1 in the same competition at Dens.

After scoring four goals in 23 appearances in his first season, he faded from the first team fixture the following season, scoring only one goal in seven outings, the last of which was in a 3-1 defeat by Falkirk at the beginning of March. At the end of the season, The Balding Joe Roy as he was nicknamed, was released and joined Third Lanark where he spent a season, before returning to the city to play, but this time across the road at Tannadice, signing for Unitee in May 1957.

The following season he scored once in fourteen league appearances for United before sustaining a knee injury which forced his retirement from the game on medical advice in October 1958
