Biography

A forward from the mid-fifties, Jimmy stepped up to the senior grade from Larkhall in September 1950 when he signed for Stirling Albion for whom he scored 33 goals in 105 outings. Badly hit by call-ups to national service, Chalmers was one of a number of players recruited by Willie Thornton during the transitional season of 1954-55, costing a fee of £4000 shortly after the turn of the year.

Renowned for his speed and shot, he'll always be fondly remembered by the older supporters for scoring a hat-trick against Dundee United in a high-scoring League Cup Quarter Final in 1956, which Dundee won 7-3.

Indeed, with fourteen goals, he finished up as top scorer at Dens that season and in total scored 28 times in 94 appearances during his three years at the club. In the wake of a disappointing Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Aberdeen in March 1958, the forward moved to Rugby Park very shortly afterwards in exchange for Dave Curlett.

Kilmarnock never benefited from his scoring prowess to the same degree as Stirling and Dundee had, making only nine appearances and scoring twice before having to retire from playing the following year.
