Biography

Although he signed for Dundee in 1954 and stayed with the club for twelve years, Hugh Reid may well be one of The Dee’s most unfortunate ever players. After making just one appearance in his debut season Reid became a regular at right back during the 1955/56 season through until the 1957/58 campaign when a certain Alex Hamilton began to break into the first team in the same position.

The pair would share right back duties during the next season but by 60/61 it was clear that Hamilton was becoming the preferred choice, as he limited Reid to just 11 starts. Tragically for Reid, Hamilton would make the position fully his own the next season, playing in every game of every competition and leaving Reid watching from the sidelines as Dundee FC became Champions of Scotland.

Making only ten appearances over the next two seasons, Reid would play 11 times for Dundee in 1964/65 in what proved to be his final season both with the team and in the senior game.

A one-club man, Reid signed for The Dee from Carnoustie Panmure and while he may have missed out on a League Winner’s medal, he did play in one memorable League Cup game.

The date was September 12th 1956 and Dundee lined up at Dens Park in the first leg of the League Cup Quarter Final against their nearest rivals, Dundee United, with Reid in his usual place at right back.

By full time a monumental game had unfolded, two goals from United’s Jimmy Reid and one from Dave Sturrock cancelled out by a Jimmy Chalmers hat-trick and one goal apiece from Gordon Black, George Christie, George O’Hara and George Merchant as The Dee secured a 7-3 derby triumph. United would gain some revenge, winning the return leg 2-1, but an aggregate trouncing of 9-4 took Dundee to the Semi Finals where they sadly lost out to Partick Thistle 3-2 in a replay after the original tie had finished goalless.

Doubtless Reid would have swapped being involved in such a memorable game for a League Winner’s medal but playing the day “we gave United seven” was surely some conciliation.

Sadly Hugh Reid, who played 146 times in Dark Blue and scored one goal for the club, passed away in 2018, with all at Dundee FC paying tribute to a player remembered as a skillful defender always willing to pass on his football knowledge and experience to his teammates.
