Archie was signed from Dundee schools football in 1948, joining the ground staff at 16. An inside-forward who only made one appearance for the club in the 1953-54 season, this came against Clyde in the 2-0 league defeat at Shawfield. He was freed midway through the following season.

After completing his National Service, Archie went on to play for Newcastle, Barrow and captained Brechin City.
