Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

Dundee drew with Ayr United in this hastily arranged friendly at Somerset Park. Dundee did most of the attacking, but their build-up was spoiled by indifferent shooting. However, with the Scottish Cup in view, the game was more important than the result.

The first half was dominated by Dundee, but for all their attacking Hugh Sproat in the Ayr goal had few anxious moments.

Dundee's best chances came during a bright opening 15 minutes with McGeachie shoot- ing past, Ray Stephen narrowly missing with a close range header and Graham Harvey setting up a fine chance which went abegging.

Two minutes from the interval Ray Stephen appeared to be tripped in the box.

Referee McCluskey disallowed Dundee claims for a penalty, but one minute later he allowed a less clear-cut claim at the other end when Ayr's Lex Grant fell between Jim Smith and Bobby Glennie as they chased a long ball in the Dundee box.

Craig Buchanan made no mistake from the spot to give Ayr a lucky half-time lead.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Dundee were immediately on the look-out for equality. John Brown had one 30-yard effort scrambled away by Hugh Sproat after three minutes.

Four minutes later Brown. unleashed another 30-yard effort, this time from a free kick, and Sproat was beaten as the ball passed under his body for the equaliser.

Dundee went after the winner but the nearest they came was a close-in Stephen header on the hour which Sproat scrambled clear.

Albert Kidd, Lex Richardson and Forsyth joined the action, replacing McGeachie, Harvey and Smith, but not even the newcomers could manufacture a win, leaving Archie Knox not totally satisfied on the night.
