Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

Dundee, subdued and de fence minded for the first hour, blossomed in the later stages of their tour game with Second Division Bristol Rovers-but failed to end the deadlock in the friendly at Eastville.

Stewart McLaren volleyed just wide of Rovers' post, Ian Fleming was inches too high with a header and Iain Ferguson brought a stretching save from Wales under-21 goalkeeper Martin Thomas.

But Rovers survived this spell of pressure, tightened up at the back again and regained the initiative before the end.

Neither side, however, pos sessed front men sharp enough to capitalise on the limited number of openings carved and a goalless draw was a fair reflection of a match that pro duced plenty of effort but little flair.

Rovers, with player-manager Terry Cooper, the former Leeds and England star, prompting from midfield, should have made more of their earlier possession.

Dundee lost Jim Shirra after 25 minutes with a cut eye and as the team took time to readjust to the resulting reshuffle, Robert Geddes was forced to make an acrobatic one-handed save from Mike Barratt.

Then, early in the second half, Dundee's keeper did well to keep out a David Williams drive. shortly after Shaun Penny had two shots blocked on the goal line in quick succession.
