Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

Dundee well and truly trounced Valenciennes in this Friendship League match on a fog-bound Dens Park last night and so avenged that 1-0 defeat in France earlier in the season

It was only a second-half wonder goal from Gilzean, however, that finally settled the issue.

Cousin threw away ? great chance after Gilzean slipped through a perfect pass, but he hung on too long before shoot ing and the chance was wasted. Gizean made amends a few minutes later. A cross from the bye-line from the inside left was fumbled by the French keeper.

The ball broke to Henderson who rammed it home almost apologetically. The Frenchmen were making poor going of it, but in five minutes they equalised.

With the Dens Park defence inb a fankle, outside left Guillen crossed and right winger Baulu lashed it into the net. Two minutes later. Dundee went ahead again. And what a sensational goal it was.

As Cowie prepared to take a free kick on the 18yds. line, the whole of the French team lined the goal. Cowie slipped to Gilzean, whose vicious rising shot twanged the

top of the net. Then two minutes from half time a long cross from Cowie to Gilzean was stroked ahead to Cousin and Alan made no mistake from 15yds.

After 15 minutes of the second half Masnaghetti tried a shot which was punched away by centre half Smith. A penalty it was and Legrand made no mistake from the spot.

Gilzean put Dundee further ahead with an opportunist goal 10 minutes later. A long through Pass from Cowle beat Koclk and the ball broke through to the inside left, who in typical fashion hooked the ball over the advancing keeper.
