Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

With all eyes on Dundee's foreign trialists, it was the familiar face of James Grady who netted the game's only goal.

The little striker opened the scoring on the half hour after an opening period in which neither goalkeeper had been troubled.

A good run by Raeside on the right culminated in a cross which was flicked on by Coyne into the path of the little striker.

However, the ball ought to have been cleared by Montrose defender Gary Paterson-one of four for mer Dark Blues in the Montrose line-up-but the big man stumbled over the ball leaving Grady to tap home into an empty net from 12 yards.

Montrose were quick to respond, with Scott firing just over the bar in 35 minutes.

Just before the break Dundee's Dutch trialist Frank Van Eijs unleashed a 25-yard left-foot effort which cannoned off the left hand post and into the arms of Paul Mathers, another former Dundee star who was turning out for the Links Park team on trial.

After the break Montrose had a far greater share of the ball than they had in the first period. Just seven minutes into the second period a dangerous-looking cross from Shand bounced in the six-yard box before Dundee's young goalkeeper Jamie Langfield came out well to smother the ball.

Four minutes later Montrose centre-half Gary Paterson drilled a 25-yard shot that looked netbound before Langfield, at full stretch, tipped the ball round his right-hand post.

This was followed by a flurry of substitutions by both sides, with Portuguese pair Valido and Nevees being introduced to the action for Dundee, Van Eijs and Robbie Raeside the men withdrawn.

Scott was given two fine chances to level the tie for the Links Park side.

With just two minutes left a free-kick from the full back sailed just over the bar from 20 yards. Then, in the dying seconds, the ball fell to him only eight yards from the Dundee goal. He hit a left-foot shot which Langfield did well to save with his legs.
