Match Report

Dundee were defeated 4-1 by Inverness Caley Thistle for the second time this season and, despite being justified to feel hard done by to go in behind at the break, they could have no complaints after the second period.

Caley have been this season's high scorers in the SPL and again put on a display to back this up although they didn't have it all their own way, especially in the first half.

Barry Smith stuck with the same starting eleven who earned a draw in the Highlands the previous week when Ross County were the hosts. The main story on the team sheet was the return to the bench of club captain Stephen O'Donnell for his first involvement in a match day squad since August. The midfielder was also joined by returning from injury defender Brian Easton.

In the pouring rain, Dundee started brightly and with the first attack had the ball in the net, although it was ruled out. Strikers Colin Nish and John Baird combined with the former sticking the ball past Caley keeper Reguero, but the assistant referee had already flagged. Dundee kept up the pressure and Reguero was called into action again, this time saving a Matt Lockwood strike from 25 yards. The Caley keeper had to steady himself after the stop before collecting the ball.

A minute later again he was in action as Dundee had a great chance to take the lead. Gary Irvine played the ball forward and the bounce caught out centre half Gary Warren allowing Colin Nish to run in behind; under pressure he tried to place the ball past Reguero but the keeper saved well.

All these chances came within the opening ten minutes and four minutes after Nish had been denied, Caley had the lead. Richie Foran was played wide on the left and but for Rab Douglas' finger tips his shot would have found the net instead of coming back off the post. Dundee failed to properly clear and when Billy McKay forced another great save from the Dundee number one, the ball broke for Foran who was bundled over by Declan Gallagher's shoulder barge. Referee Kevin Clancy pointed to the spot and McKay stepped up and side footed home. It was Caley's first real attack of the afternoon and had brought the first goal.

Dundee kept at it and seven minutes later were back on level terms. They broke away with Jim McAlister taking the ball up the left; he had Nicky Riley in loads of space on the far side and found him with a cross field pass. Riley took a touch before drilling the ball in off the inside of the far post.

Baird then forced Reguero into a save to keep the score level. As the game settled down Dundee seemed to be at ease, when out of the blue Caley took the lead again. Owain Tudur Jones was given too much space and smashed home a low shot from 25 yards. Colin Nish had the final chance of the half with a free kick from the edge of the box, but it clipped the wall and flew just over the bar.

Dundee went in at the break slightly disappointed to be behind but with four minutes of the restart Caley pulled away with a third goal after some sloppy defending. lain Davidson's short back pass was picked up by Billy McKay and despite going over as Douglas touched the ball away from his feet, the on form striker managed to hook the ball into the empty net. The third goal all but killed the game with Caley growing in confidence throughout the second half. A chance for each side followed with Foran firing over for Caley before Lockwood drove a shot wide for Dundee.

With 20 minutes left, ex-Dee Andrew Shinnie should have added another when he was played in one-on-one, but Rab Douglas showed his class and getting strong hands to push the shot away. Dundee replaced John Baird with Mark Stewart but soon after Shinnie did get his goal. Brother Graeme Shinnie played him in and Andrew cut inside with ease before firing past Douglas who had no chance. It was the icing on the cake of a decent second half performance from Caley.

Dundee made one more change with Ryan Conroy replacing Riley but it was Caley who ended the match with a chance to extend their lead. Andrew Shinnie had a chance to go for goal himself but rolled the ball to Ross Draper. The midfielder got his shot away but again Douglas saved well. All things considered, the 4-1 scoreline was maybe a little harsh on Dundee but after playing well in the first half, but Caley took control after their third goal and we're well worth their lead.
