Mickael Antione-Curier scored his second goal in as many games to set Alex Rae's men on their way to a comfortable win at Dens Park which created little in the way of excitement or goal-scoring opportunity. It did however see the Dark Blues close the gap on league leaders Hamilton to four points as Billy Reid's men dropped point at St.Johnstone.
There were four changes made from the line-up which beat Motherwell on Monday with David Cowan, Paul Dixon, Colin McMenamin and Antione-Curier making their way into the starting eleven.
Skipper Ludo Roy retained his place in goal and showed his worth against Mark McGhee's men and he was on the ball within the first minute to tip away Jim McAllister's fierce cross.
With six minutes on the clock Eddie Malone's corner was cleared only as far as Kevin McDonald. His touch to McHale allowed the midfielder to carefully weight his pass back into the area with Antione-Curier on hand to net from six yards with keeper Lee Robinson's touch not enough to keep the scoreline level. Ludo was again on his toes to palm away lan Russell's shot from 18 yards before Gavin Swankie doubled Dundee's advantage. He picked up the ball and drove inside and beat keeper Robinson from just outside the area in the eighth minute.
In the 36th minute Chris Millar was cautioned by referee Alan Muir. The first half came to an end with the only notable point of interest being Ludo forced off with what looked to be a hand injury allowing Samson to enter the fray before David McGregor's headed effort came back of Samson's left upright and away.
The second half started where the first had ended, with neither team able to retain possession or break the defensive rearguard. Paul McHale found himself booked in the 57th minute as frustration began to show before Derek Lyle received a mixed reaction as he replaced goal-scorer Antione-Curier.
The second half talking point came in the 62nd minute when Chris Millar received his marching orders after Alan Muir adjudged him to have dangerously retrieved the ball from Swankie leaving the visitors with ten men and almost half an hour of the game still to play.
The cup exertions of the week previous looked to have taken their toll and with the three points looking safe Dundee soaked up the pressure of ten man Morton while attacking on the break with Swankie shooting wide after linking up Lyle and Kevin McDonald unable to get the ball from under his feet in time to release the shot.
In addition to the sending off of Chris Millar, Paul McHale and Barry Smith picked up bookings.

No league table has been added for this season.
Monday's night's victory at Motherwell was a terrific result and reaching the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup is a great boost for the Club.
I was absolutely delighted with everyone, because it was a tremendous collective effort by the whole team. Motherwell have been having an excellent season and are eyeing a European place. We've gone there, and, despite having two men sent off, have deservedly won and we should have had more than two goals.
We were strong and played good football against a side who are one of the fittest in the top division.
One thing is certain; it won't be a day Ludovic Roy will forget in a hurry.
His wife was due to have the baby on the day of the game, but went into labour at 11 pm on Sunday and the wee lad was born on Monday morning.
As they also have a wee girl, in addition to being at the birth, Ludo had to get his daughter to his in-laws, then pick her up so she could see her new brother. Then he had a couple of hours sleep before joining us. Ludo had spoken to me about it last week and in his mind there was no way he was going to miss the game.
Once he called to say the baby was safely here and he was on his way, it never occurred to me to even ask him if he was OK.
It demonstrated what a superb professional he is and I know if he turns up for a game he is ready to give his best he was excellent and, for all that had gone on during the previous 24 hours, I knew he would be!
It was a fantastic performance by the boys to go to a place like Motherwell, who are flying high, and produce such a remarkable result.
Meanwhile, disappointing results on our last two league games has allowed Accies to open up a seven- point gap.
The most frustrating aspect of the defeat by Queen of the South in our last home match was that we played well enough and created enough chances to have the game won by half-time, but we simply didn't show up in the second half and lost three horrendous goals.
The only good thing to come out of the game was Colin McMenamin scoring twice on his debut. And being honest, we were probably lucky to get away with a point from the match against Livingston. Until last Monday, we hadn't been firing on all cylinders for a few weeks.
Now it's all about having the belief that we showed on Monday into our league matches and getting points we need to catch Hamilton.
That starts against Morton this afternoon, and despite their lowly league position, we must be wary of them because they have some very good players and away from home this season have shown that they are a force to reckoned with.
