Match Report

A late goal from Milan Palenik eased Dundee a point closer to the top of the First Division at Broadwood. The Czech scoring to earn a draw while leaders Hamilton were going down 3-0 at Firhill. Clyde had taken a 71st minute lead when Gary Arbuckle latched onto a miss-hit kick out from Craig Samson to run on and score and Dundee had rarely looked likely to level - much to the frustration of the travelling support who had been aware of Hamilton being a couple of goals down at half time.

Dundee made three changes from the midweek visit north to Huntly in the Scottish Cup. Kevin McDonald was suspended after going over the limit for bookings in Dundee's last league outing, and Paul Dixon and Jan Zemlik dropped to the bench. Gary McKenzie returning from injury went straight into the starting line up, Gavin Swankie and Jani Sturm also came into the first eleven.. The first half didn't produce many chances but saw Dundee dominate possession. Fans had to wait till the twelfth minute for the games first real attack of the game, it came when Freddie Daquin took on Neil McGregor down the right and picked out Sturm. The Dundee striker could not turn quick enough and when he finally got his shot away it was blocked easily by the Clyde defence.

Sturm did have the best chance of the half and should have given Dundee the lead minutes before half time. Scott Robertson drove into the Clyde box and his low cut back was side footed towards goal by the Slovenian, the shot however was straight at Clyde's goalkeeper David Hutton and he was more than happy to hold on to the ball.

Clyde's first real chance of the match came just after the break, Steven Masterton's twenty yard free kick flew just over the bar. Clyde could have been a man down early on in the half, Bob Davidson's perfect ball over the top played in Jani Sturm and although he was thirty yards from goal many thought Neil McGregor was the last man when he tripped Sturm but the referee decided only to issue a yellow card to the Clyde centre back.

From the resulting free kick Clyde had a chance on the counter attack. MacLennan held the ball up well and the ball eventually fell to Masterton via a Eddie Malone block, the Bully Wee midfield struck low and Craig Samson could only watch as the ball whistled just past the post.

Clyde had a penalty appeal turned down just past the hour mark. MacLennan went over when challenged by Palenik but referee Steve Conroy wasn't interested in the protests from the home players and supporters.

Conroy was again subject of protests only five minutes later when he pulled up play to issue a yellow card to Paul McHale for a late challenge but refused to let advantage be played when the ball ran through to Dougie Imrie who looked poised to score.

Clyde's caretaker manager Dougie Bell who was only told he'd be in charge of the side yesterday after the departure of ex-Dee Colin Hendry was the next man who was in trouble with Conroy. Bell's arguing with the referee's assistant saw him being sent to the stand.

Bell couldn't even have been settled in his chair when he saw his side take the lead. Craig Samson's poor goal kick was intercepted by Bully Wee top scorer Gary Arbuckle and his low well hit strike left the keeper with no chance.

Dundee had no choice but to push forward and Jan Zemlik was introduced replacing Jani Sturm. It wasn't long though before the referee was the center of the action once again sending both Dundee assistant manager Dave Farrell and Gary Bollan the Clyde coach to the stand.

Gavin Swankie was replaced by David O'Brien as Dundee looked to put more pressure on the home defence. It was Dundee's first substitute, Zemlik, that caused a problem for the Clyde defence, knocking down a long ball for Scott Robertson who's excellent take down put him in a fine position to score but his shot was easily collected by Hutton in the Clyde goal.

All Dundee's pressure almost came back to bite them as Clyde broke, Dougie Imrie ran onto a long ball over the top he managed to cut back on himself well to beat Malone who matched his run only for his shot to be saved low by Samson.

Gary McKenzie won a free kick in a promising position when he was fouled shielding the ball in the Clyde half. The defender also picked up a yellow card for his troubles though, after he went head to head with Kevin Bradley who committed the original foul the Clyde man also seeing yellow.

The equaliser came from the resulting free kick when a great Eddie Malone set-piece was aimed for Jan Zemlik who jumped with his marker Christian Smith, the ball flew over both but Bob Davidson was standing in the right place outside the back post and knocked it straight across goal where Palenik was first to react to put Dundee level with only one minute of regualtion time remaining.

A late scare was still to come though when Clyde goal scorer Arbuckle dispossessed McKenzie only to fire well wide of the mark.
