Match Report

Manager Alex Rae began his touchline ban by watching his side record a 3-1 victory over basement club Stirling in harsh weather conditions at Dens Park.

Those present endured a dire first half which created little in the way of goal-scoring opportunities before two home grown talents secured the points in a ten minute second half rout of Allan Moore's men.

The opening spell saw both teams struggle to get a foothold in the game with both teams adapting to the weather conditions. With eight minutes gone Paul McHale chipped the ball forward for Gavin Swankie to latch onto but the pass carried too much weight and the winger was unable to connect with the pass.

Jan Zemlik then looked to be hauled down in the area but referee Eddie Smith waved play on while David Worrell also took a tumble in the area after a through ball from Kevin McDonald, but again Smith was unwilling to point to the spot.

Stirling lacked any attacking prowess and rarely threatened Samson's goal, but Stuart Devin's corner was headed on by Craig Reid, with the defender's free header going wide.

Both sides made first half substitutions with Paul Hay replacing Laurie Ellis and Jan Zemlik making way for Derek Lyle.

Before the half time whistle was blown both sides had the chance to go into the break with the advantage. Jani Sturm's cross into the area was headed defensively away from goal by Swankie instead of attacking Myles Hogarth's goal while David McKenna ran clean through on Samson with only a last ditch well-timed tackle from Milan Palenik keeping the scores level.

As has already been proven this season a half-time team talk can do the world of good, and Alex Rae's words of wisdom paid off eleven minutes into the second half as Dundee took a deserved lead. Gavin Swankie slipped the ball across the six yard box after drawing the keeper from his line, leaving Robertson the simplest of tasks to slot the ball home into an empty net.

Kevin McDonald then kept up his scoring run as he added to Scott Robertson's opener. Gavin Swankie again proved provider as he broke with the ball from a Stirling attack. His pass allowed Kevin McDonald to control the ball with his first touch, and send the ball beyond keeper Hogarth with his second, from nearly thirty yards, for his second goal in as many games.

Stirling's misery was complete in the 66th minute as Derek Lyle got the goal his play duly deserved. The former Stirling forward was hauled down on the right wing. From there Paul McHale's resultant quick free kick looked to be heading safely into the arms of the Binos goalkeeper but intervention of Lyle who got to the ball first and slotted it past the helpless Hogarth.

Dundee could have added to their tally with Paul McHale's shot from 25 yards looking to be headed for the top corner but Hogarth was equal to the shot with a diving save plucking the ball from the air.

In the 89th minute Craig Samson was denied his third clean sheet in as many games as Steven Bell's shot from twenty yards proved to be mere consolation for the visitors.

However that wasn't to be the end of the action as Stirling hit the post from a free kick sent through space in the Dundee wall.

Manager's Programme Notes

Rightly so, Hamilton have gained plenty of plaudits for the exceptional season they have been enjoying.

Week in and week out, they have been winning and it has been a hard shift for our players to keep pressure on them by matching and you have to credit them for doing that so far.

The boys here are really buying into what we are trying to do and I can't praise them too highly for the way they approach everything that's asked of them.

A couple of times their form has dipped, but the attitude has always been excellent and that gives me as much reason for hope as their ability.

In the past few weeks, we have beaten Hamilton, Dunfermline and St Johnstone and, whatever their league positions are, these are the three biggest teams we face in this league.

Following the disappointment of the defeat to Clyde the previous week, it was good to get back to winning ways, even more so as it was against Hamilton and cut the lead at the top to just three points.

The players showed great determination and a steeliness to grind out a result.

That's something we've been trying to drum into them and it's something we'll have to continue to do week in, week out.

was pleased that Jan Zemlik was able to return following his groin problem.

I With Bob Davidson and Kevin McDonald having tired, we had to take them off, but it was good to see big Jan coming back.

As I've said before, we have good options available for front places and I want to see the competition maintained. That applies elsewhere and I was delighted that I have been able to extend Eddie Malone's loan at least until the end of this month.

He has done very well since his arrived and, along with the rest of the boys, had a good game at Dunfermline last Saturday.

Martyn Corrigan also did well when he was here, and, obviously with the transfer window not too far away, there are a few things we are looking at.

There is no doubt that last week's win at Dunfermline was another big win for us.

Before the game, I maintained that Dunfermline would climb the table as the season went on and nothing I saw at East End Park has made me change my mind about that.

They still have a strong squad and good players and I was very pleased with the way my players went about their business. In the first half, we matched them and, in the second half, put them under pressure. With a little bit of composure with the final ball, we might have won more comfortably than by just a single goal.

But Hamilton maintained their three-point advantage following a 4-2 win at Stirling who are our visitors this afternoon.

They may be bottom of the table, but there is absolutely no danger that we will be treating them lightly.

How competitive this league is was shown when Clyde came here when they were at the foot of the table. Additionally, we had to twice come from behind to earn a draw against Allan Moore's side at Forthbank earlier in the season

Hopefully, we can do one better this time to set us up nicely for the busy Festive programme that is around the corner. And as this is our last programme before Christmas, can I wish everyone the compliments of the season.
