Match Report

Scotland's capital city was treated to a game of consummate cosmopolitan skill. And how the fans loved it.

Both sides were afforded a standing ovation at the end, with even Dundee's 3000 visiting fans not the least discouraged at the end result.

Eight different nationalities brought their own approach to this occasion, which led to an enthralling encounter.

In the end, the more direct. approach of Hearts won the day with two last-gasp goals from skipper Colin Cameron.

Just when it looked as if the game would finish all square, Hearts substitute Andy Kirk made a long dart through the middle. He laid the ball off to McSwegan and, although he failed to control it, Cameron was on hand to crash the loose ball low into the net.

Then, deep into injury time. Dundee's player-manager Ivano Bonetti brought down Fulton in the box and Cameron drilled in the spot-kick.

Yet, for almost an hour, a Hearts win looked most unlikely as Dundee produced a full repartee of clever play.

The visitors took the lead after Petric was booked for bringing down Caniggia. His fellow Argentine, Beto Carranza, stepped up to sweep the 28-yard free-kick high into Niemi's left-hand corner.

Although Hearts had more of the play they created little and Dundee always looked the more likely to add to their score.

However, the longer the game went on the more content Dundee appeared to hold their lead.

Hearts equalised when Grant Murray headed in a Juanjo corner from close range. After this, Hearts laid siege to Dundee's goal and, in the end, deserved to win because they showed greater desire.

Cameron was Hearts' inspiration, refusing to accept anything less than a victory. He was behind every Hearts move and drove the game on at every opportunity.

He was ably assisted by Pressley and Petric at the back. Given both had been booked early on for fouls on Caniggia, they stood up well to the former World Cup star.

Fulton and Juanjo were also impressive for the home side.

After their encouraging start, Dundee would have taken three points if they had forced the game at 1-0 up. Central defenders De Marchi and Tweed were outstanding, but Bonetti was left on his own too often in midfield.

Apart from Pressley and Petric, Hearts also had Murray cautioned for bringing down Smith from behind and Durie for a foul on De Marchi. Dundee's Bonetti was booked for dissent after Hearts' second goal.
