Marc Miller completed the season's most remarkable turnaround when he rattled in Saints' injury time winner.
Just two days after being released by Livingston, for making a gesture to supporters, the midfield man became an instant hero.
The Tayside rivals put on a riveting derby and few would have complained if both sides had taken a point each.
But, with the referee looking at his watch, Paddy Connolly robbed Barry Smith and rolled the ball to Millar.
And, inside 24 hours of signing until the end of the season, he lashed a fierce 20-yard drive past Douglas and in off the underside of the bar. He had come on just seven minutes earlier.
Defenders did best in a match which kept the interest right to the death, with Danny Griffin and Jim Weir rock solid at the back for St Johnstone.
And the visitors had outstanding service from Stephen Tweed and Smith when Dundee were forced on to the back foot
It was they who started best and when James Grady crossed from the right in nine minutes, Eddie Annand measured his header, but missed the far post by inches.
Saints reply was a magnificent Griffin rocket from 25 yards which was fisted away by Douglas after Gary Bollan rolled a free-kick to him.
Eight minutes later, the ball broke kindly off Graeme Jones for Keith Halloran, but he side-footed the ball neatly to Douglas from 15 yards.
Seconds from half-time, Bollan robbed Grady and sent an unstoppable 30-yard drive high past Douglas, to give the home side a spectacular lead.
But that lasted just three minutes into the second half when Gavin Ran found Grady on the right and his header was controlled quickly by Willie Falconer who stroked in his fourteenth goal of the season
St Johnstone might have been back in front in 58 minutes when Frail's cross was headed down by Jones, but O'Halloran completely wasted a fine chance six yards from goal.
Five players were booked-Saints' Weir, Griffin and Jones with Dundee's Tweed and Falconer.
