Match Report

Dundee leapfrogged their opponents in the league thanks to goals from Steven Boyack and Gavin Rae that silenced the home fans and shredded the confidence of Killie.

To add to their woes, defender Kevin McGowne was given his marching orders after 62 minutes for a deliberate hand ball on the edge of the box.

The home side's afternoon had begun in promising fashion.

Despite the loss of Paul Wright through injury, and the loss of new signing Cocard, Killie camped themselves in the Dundee half for most of the first period.

The Taysiders struggled to cope with the constant probing of Burke and Baker, whose sorties down the left provided the main thrust in attack.

However, in the 14th minute, a poor clearance by Barry Smith gave Jerome Vareille sight of goal. His swift turn and shot almost caught visiting keeper Robert Douglas cold.

Minutes later, a Gary Holt 25-yarder was parried to safety by Douglas at full stretch. Holt was involved again in the 20th minute when his long pass from the centre found Vareille on the edge of the box.

This time he skimmed clear of his marker before curling a brilliant shot that beat the keeper, but rebounded off the post.

All this pressure was to no avail and, five minutes from the break, Dundee took the lead.

The hard-working Boyack a snip at £25,000 from Rangers - ran on to a simple pass from Willie Falconer before bursting into the box and shooting home. Killie's task of redeeming the situation became an impossible one when former St Johnstone man McGowne was sent off. Gavin Rae killed the game with a super, solo effort.

It began with him drifting past several defenders and culminated in a fine drive that left home No. 1 Colin Meldrum helpless.

Dundee came into the game with severe criticism of recent defensive problems ringing in their ears from manager Jocky Scott. This win, and the blank sheet, will do wonders for their confidence. In addition to McGowne's dismissal, the home side's Baker and Burke were booked.

Dundee's Falconer, Annand and Maddison were also cautioned.
