Match Report

A power cut delayed the kick-off to this match for 35 minutes, but once the necessary repairs were done it was the First Division side which provided the power.

The Greenock side raced into a first-half, two- goal lead. With 30 minutes on the clock, full- back Owen Archdeacon got on the end of a half clearance and, from 25 yards, his left-foot drive gave keeper Robert Douglas no hope.

Even better was to follow eight minutes later, and the fans could scarcely believe it.

The Dundee defence was at sixes and sevens as they attempted to clear amid a goalmouth scramble, but Ross Matheson somehow twisted round and poked the ball into the net.

The Dens Parkers knew they had to do something and quickly. Four minutes from the interval, danger-man Eddie Annand obliged when he strode through the home defence, before coolly slotting his low shot into the net.

Boss Jocky Scott must be wondering how his side didn't at least earn a replay, as they turned on the style in the second half.

In 48 minutes, it took an outstanding one handed save from Ally Maxwell to turn aside an Annand free-kick. Then the keeper could only watch as a Hugh Robertson drive clipped a defender and cracked against the crossbar.

But Dundee knew it was not going to be their day when Maxwell somehow denied Willie Falconer from close range just 12 minutes from time.

In a really competitive tie, Morton had Kevin Thomas, Ross Matheson and Derek Anderson all yellow-carded, while Dundee's Willie Miller was booked for an off-the-ball incident.
