With Dundee having wrapped up the First Division title last week, this game was always going to be of more importance to cash- strapped Falkirk as they chase the £250,000 runners-up prize.
It was the Bairns who made the brighter start and, as early as the third minute, McAllister raced down the right wing and cut a low ball across goal.
Anderson stabbed out a timely foot to clear, however, The home side should have taken the lead in the 32nd minute. Raeside trod on the ball 30 yards out and McGrillen was left to run in on goal, but, with only Douglas to beat, the striker tamely shot straight at the keeper.
Dundee suffered a blow two minutes from the break when Tully had to come on for the injured Smith.
The Bairns completely took over at the start of the second half and Moss, Crabbe and McAllister all went close before the visitors broke in the 58th minute and Eddie Annand's right-foot shot from 12 yards smacked against the crossbar before being cleared.
The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute. Scott played a precision pass behind the Dundee defence and McGrillen cooly guided it past Douglas for what proved to be the winner.
Dundee set up a grandstand finish with an Anderson free-kick that went close and Brian Irvine and Grady both had efforts blocked on the line.
