Paul Tosh earned Dundee a point thanks to a late strike, but the Dens Park side were left puzzled about a penalty decision from referee Hugh Dallas which swung this game.

With Dundee still in front thanks to a 16th minute Iain Anderson goal, Dallas suddenly decided that a fiercely struck Derek McWilliams shot into a crowded goalmouth had been handled by central defender Robert Raeside and pointed to the spot.

Although Raeside protested that the ball had hit him on the chest he was waved aside and Jered Stirling knocked in an equaliser from the spot.

Dundee manager Jim Duffy admitted wryly, "It was certainly a hard hit shot, but if the referee says it is a penalty then it is a penalty."

However, Duffy was pleased at the industry of his side and added, "I could not fault their strike rate. We made around six chances, scored with two of them and hit the bar.

"We probably were up against it after that penalty and losing a second, but we came back to get a share of the points."

Chic Charnley, back at Firhill, crafted the opener when he collected the ball just outside the Dundee penalty area, moved forward confidently, almost to the half way line, and then found Dariusz Adamczuk on the right.

His cross picked out the incoming lain Anderson and from just outside the penalty area he fired a rising drive beyond keeper John Hillcoat and into the roof of the net.

But Partick fought back and their danger man Derek McWiliams twice came close midway through that first half.

After their 69th minute equaliser Partick, with new belief in themselves, pushed forward hard and got a second just nine minutes later.

Andy Lyons, who had just come on, slotted a superb cross to the far post where Gareth Evans headed in off a post. The danger signs were there for Dundee but the Dens Parkers came back and six minutes from time Paul Tosh punished some slack marking to stride through the middle and fire in the equaliser from around 25 yards.

Then just before the end Dundee came close to a winner but saw a shot hit woodwork.

Partick manager Murdo MacLeod commented, "We were flat during the first half and I don't know if that was caused by the long lay off we have had, but we passed the ball much better after the interval."
