Furious Alex MacDonald lashed out bitterly at Dundee's tactics after a mind-numbing goalless draw.

And he was involved in a touch line bust-up with rival boss Jim Duffy after a second-half clash between top scorer Brian McPhee and Dundee's Dariusz Adamczuk.

MacDonald accused the Dens Park side of being too defensive and snapped: "They came for a point-and that's exactly what they got.

"A few times they had 10 men behind the ball and that sort of indicates what they were looking for."

Airdrie stayed out in front in the promotion race despite taking only a point - but they had desperately wanted a victory to celebrate being given the go ahead to build their own stadium.

MacDonald added: "It was a dour game but the positive thing is that we didn't get beaten.

"We certainly could have done with a couple of goals."

But he played down the flashpoint incident in which Adamczuk crashed to the ground clutching his face after McPhee ran past him.

It happened moments after the Pole had been yellow carded for a wild lunge on the Diamonds' goal ace. MacDonald raced out of his dugout while Dens Park chief Duffy and assistant John McCormack also burst from their seats to complain.

Both bosses argued angrily and McCormack joined the shouting match and signalled an elbow had been used. But referee Jim McCluskey missed the incident and the players escaped without a warning.

MacDonald said: "I have a video of the game and you'll be able to see yourself what happened.

"But these things happen in football and you've just got to get on with it."

Dundee boss Duffy admitted the game started badly and just got worse.

He said: "It's nothing to do with Airdrie. I felt that the teams cancelled each other out.

"It was a very good, solid defensive performance from us but we never created much.

"In the second half the players seemed to settle for the point.

"They were looking for a mistake and we nearly got one when Andy Rhodes slipped near the end but nothing came of it."

Rhodes stumbled to the ground after taking a pass back but managed to hook the ball clear before Paul Tosh could pounce.

A goal then would have been hard on Airdrie who had been the better team and had the bulk of possession.

Dundee keeper Billy Thomson made several crucial saves in the first half from Ken Eadie, Tony Smith and McPhee and had to boot away a passback from Adamczuk.

Yet Dundee came closest to scoring in 56 minutes when winger Kevin Magee turned inside Sean Sweeney and fired the ball in only to see Rhodes block it with his foot.

Diamonds ace Marvyn Wilson saw a shot graze the post and in the final minutes sub Paddy Connolly blew another chance.
