Dundee looked as though they were suffering from a Coke hangover after their midweek cup glory night.
They missed a barrow load of easy chances with Jim Hamilton - the whose goal dumped Aberdeen on Tuesday - the biggest culprit.
But Hammy made amends by setting up Robbie Raeside 40th minute headed opener and then adding No.2 from close range after 72 minutes.
Dens gaffer Jim Duffy said: "Hammy finished off the second goal brilliantly. He keeps scoring goals for us and as long as he's doing that I'll be happy.
"I took him off near the end as he had a slight groin injury and he'll miss our next two games through suspension.
"I thought we were a bit too frantic in the first half. We wanted the pace to be up but we needed some more composure.
"We relaxed a bit after we scored but I wouldn't say I'm delighted with the performance. My players can play a lot better than that but I'm pleased we've got the points."
Defeat was tough to take for East Fife caretaker boss Gordon Rae whose side were still in with a shout until Hamilton's killer second.
In fact just minutes earlier sub Dougie Hope had brought a great save out of Dens keeper Billy Thomson.
Rae moaned: "We're feeling a bit sorry for ourselves as they were two bad goals we lost.
"We didn't cause them enough problems when we were going for ward and just before they scored their second, we had a good chance which the keeper saved."

No league table has been added for this season.
The last week has been a very good one for us.
It started at Love Street where we collected the very important points. We knew it would be a difficult match, especially in view of Saints just having a appointed a new manager, but we won thanks to a superbly disciplined performance. I was also delighted that iain Ferguson scored the winner for what was his first goal since returning to the club.
Given the confidence of that victory we went on to produce another outstanding Coca-Cola Cup performance against fancied opposition. Aberdeen had been riding high and many people had predicted a walk-over for the Pittodrie side.
The atmosphere was tremendous and it is amazing just what it does to players adrenaline. Everyone wearing a dark blue jersey responded magnificently and we deservedly pulled off another famous victory.
It has been too long since we recorded a win over Aberdeen in any competition and immense credit goes to the players for their unstinting efforts to make it such a memorable night. Everyone at Dens Park is delighted to be in another semi-final which means that we are just ninety minutes away from another cup final
Hopefully, we can use this as the springboard for a successful promotion push.
For the second week running in the league, we meet a club affected by managerial changes. Steve Archibald left at the start of the week and their plavers will no doubt be out to prove a point. This will make things all the harder for us and obviously there won't be the same atmosphere as Tuesday night, but I want to see us take a grip of the game early on
After all, if confidence is it high in the camp after events this week, it never will be!
