Match Report

Ian Ferguson came off the bench to breath life into Dundee's one-goal win over St Mirren.

However, manager Jim Duffy refused to take all the praise for a substitution which led to one of the few bright spots in the 90 minutes.

The limping Jim Hamilton, who had a groin strain, came off and was replaced by Ferguson.

Within a minute Ferguson had curled his shot just inside the post.

Duffy said, "Ferguson gave us the impetus we needed and it paid off with the winning goal.

"Sometimes a substitution works and the manager is praised. But at other times it does not. It was a bit of luck that this came off, but I am pleased that Ferguson got his first goal for the club."

This was a match which promised much beforehand but delivered little, although Dundee will be pleased they rose above the pre-game hype of Tony Fitzpatrick at last being confirmed as the new manager of the Paisley side.

Sadly, the first half was almost a non-event.

Then, along came Ferguson to win it all just four minutes into the second period.

Saints came into it after that and Dundee were happy to see Barry Smith pop up on the line to clear a Stuart Taylor effort which had beaten keeper Billy Thomson.

Then Mark Yardley had his appeal for a penalty turned down.

At the end of the day Dundee probably deserved the points, if only for the extra skill of midfielder Chic Charnley.

Fitzpatrick said, "I"m disappointed with the result. We produced a good second half but results matter, and we need goals."
