Match Report

Dundee, with David Winnie making his debut after signing earlier in the day for a nominal fee from Hearts, advanced to the Challenge Cup quarter-finals-although they did it the hard way, playing over 70 minutes with only 10 men.

Jim Hamilton, released by Scot land under-21 boss Tommy Craig, who was in the stand, to play in this match, was the guilty man when he got involved with Airdrie defender Paul Jack.Referee John Rowbotham missed the incident but his standside assistant referee quickly drew his attention to it.

Dens boss Jim Duffy gave Hamilton a severe tongue-lashing as the youngster walked off the pitch.

The Dark Blues were 1-0 up at that stage thanks to a fine goal in eight minutes when Paul Tosh nodded home a Gary McKeown cross.

Airdrie struggled to break down the visiting defence but were given the perfect opportunity to equalise in 62 minutes when debutant Winnie handled a cross by former Dundee United striker Paddy Connolly to give away a penalty. However, Billy Thomson dived to his left to push away Jimmy Boyle's spot-kick.

Eight minutes later Tosh took advantage of poor defending by Airdrie captain Jimmy Sandison to set up George Shaw who drilled low into the net from six yards.

Winnie, who was booked in the 79th minute, was recently on trial with Carlisle. He joined Aberdeen from St Mirren for £300,000 in 1990, moving to the Jam Tarts almost exactly a year ago for £30,000.

Duffy said, "David can cover a number of positions at the back and in midfield and is a useful addition to our staff."
