Match Report

Two late goals from Jim Hamilton saved Dundee from an early exit at the hands of Dumbarton at Dens Park last night.

The Scotland under-21 star produced two goals when it mattered most to his struggling side - in the final 15 minutes.

The night had begun badly for Jim Duffy's Dens Park men when his top two keepers - Billy Thomson and Gary McGlynn - were forced out of the tie because of Injury.

That meant a first team debut for 16-year old Jamie Langfield and there was no happy start for the Dundee youngster. He got no help at all in 27 minutes when Dumbarton took a surprise lead.

Former Raith Rovers defender Robbie Raeside tried to play his way out of trouble on the edge of his own penalty box and lost the ball to Steve Dallas.

That left Langfield cruelly exposed and Dallas eluded the young keeper's desperate lunge before slotting the ball home.

Dundee, beaten finalists in the competition last season, staged a desperate revival In the second half as they faced a shock exit.

Ian McFarlane looked like defying them with a superb show in the Sons goal, making great saves from Hamilton, Raeside and Ray Farningham over the space of a few minutes.

Dundee also had a strong penalty claim rejected during that spell when a Tommy McQueen cross appeared to hit Martin McGarvey's arm.

But with time running out, Hamilton took over the tle, the forward equalising with a looping header from a Chic Charnley corner after 75 minutes.

McFarlane produced yet another super save from teenage substitute John Elliott in 89 minutes.

But the corner he conceded led to Dundee's victory, the ball being played short to Charnley, who whipped It Into the middle for Hamilton to wheel round and drive the ball Into the far corner.

Dundee's McQueen and the Sons Colin McKinnon were booked.
