Dundee unfurled last season's First Division flag before the start and they also introduced no fewer than five new signings to their team.
The visitors had ex-Ranger Kevin Drinkell making his debut but last nights surprise singing from their hosts, lain MoCall, only found a place on the bench
The home side were well on top in the early stages and after only three minutes a Graham Rix cross found keeper Westwater in good portion to foil Ian Ginean.
A minute later, Gilzean sent Ritchie clear but his cross went over the line.
Ritchie did better in the sixth minute but his far post cross was qcrobatically held by the keeper. A slack Hughes pass allowed Doddd a chance but he shot straight at the keeper.
In eight minutes, another Gilzean flick found Dodds clear but last season's top scorer again allowed Westwater to block.
But in 10 minutes the keeper had no chance when a cross from the right was deflected and from 18 yards RIX shot Into the corner of the net.
Dundee should have gone further ahead in 19 minutes but Ritchie headed straight at the keeper when It seemed easier to score.
But in 29 minutes the visitors were on level terms when enterprising refereeing by Mr Tait allowed SLOAN to run for 40 yards before ending with a 20 yards off the underside of the bar.
Four minutes after the break Richie had a great chance when Hughes and keeper Westwater clashed going to a high all but his net bound shot was cleared of the line by May.
The home alde were stunned in 72 minutes when their defence failed to clear a corner and DRINKELL swept home from close range.
