Dundee convincingly won the battle of the defeated Skol Cup semi finalists, leaving Motherwell to anticipate a season which on the evidence of this punchless performance, will be a long struggle for Premier League survival.
The homesters had the upper hand in the early stages, Fairlie and Smith both going close with the new-look Dundee defence anything but certain.
Fine runs by Gahagan and Russell came to nothing as Motherwell continued to dominate without troubling Geddes.
The men in blue continued to give the ball away with monotonous regularity, but they took the lead against the run of play when Coyne put Harvey through to score from close range. Coyne himself almost added a second with a delightful chip that went just over.
The visitors restarted very positively, and a great volley from Tommy Coyne put them further ahead when a linesman signalled that his shot, which hit the underside of the bar and bounced out, had crossed the line.
That goal completely drained the home side's confidence, and 'Well's fans voiced their disapproval at their side's lack of punch in attack as Dundee coasted home.
The unconvincing Mr McGilivray contrived to book four players-Farnin ham, of Motherwell, and McGeachie, Shannon, and McKinlay, of Dundee.
In a disappointing home performance only Wishart, Russell, and Gahagan showed anything like their true form. For the visitors, who improved the longer the game went on, Geddes, McKinlay and Coyne were best.
Man of the Match-TOM COYNE, who provided what little goal threat there was and scored a fine goal himself.
