Newspaper extract from The Sunday Post .
It can be tough at the top but Dundee found out that's it's not any easier a bit further down.
Jocky Scott's men looked like springing a surprise, and when they stole the lead it was all credit to them. Indeed Hearts generally had been the bosses and had made the chances.
For instance, Whittaker and Clark were just too precise with their attempts and Geddes parried fine shots from Colquhoun and nd Robertson.
However, the Dens men, ever dangerous on the break, and ever accurate in their approach, showed just how to grab a chance in 23 minutes.
Shannon and Jack worked together down the right and Angus rifled in a low, angled drive.
As expected, Hearts struck back instantly, and it was the signal for a really purple patch by jaunty John Colquhoun.
The winger's eye was right in as Duffy, harried by Clark in going for a Sandy Jardine lob, nodded the ball towards him. In an instant the winger smashed a high half-volley behind Geddes.
Despite the chilly, wet afternoon the 12,000 crowd were kept on their toes by the quality of the play, full of incident and non-stop aggression by both sides.
So much so that you couldn't help feel sorry for Dundee when Hearts forged ahead.
This time Robertson fed Colquhoun, who cut a delightful square pass back to Robbo, and Hearts' darling fired home below Geddes' diving body.
Misfortune seemed to hit Dundee after that, for there seemed little wrong with a Forsyth drive into the Tynecastle net, although the ref had spotted an infringement.
It was Hearts in the driving seat from then on with their fans in good voice, too.
The Gorgie support took time out to give Dundee sub Albert Kidd the bird every time he touched the ball, still having bitter memories of what the Dundee player did to them in last season's final game.
Colquhoun completed a fine piece of work by touching a Whittaker pass to Black, who blasted home a low right-footer-the leg he normally stands on!
All credit to Hearts-they had no failures and refused to let up at any point.
Clark's booking for passing a remark to the referee was their only blemish.
Dundee's Jim Smith and Harvey were cautioned for fouls.
The visitors top men on the afternoon were Geddes, Smith, Duffy and Harvey.
Man of the Match-JOHN COLQUHOUN- one hundred per centman if ever there was one.
