Only Rangers defeat at Clydebank preserved Dundee's European hopes this dreadful display certainly didn't.
Archie Knox's men gave Alan Rough his most comfortable afternoon of the season when they failed to create a single genuine chance.
Hibs boss John Blackley on the other hand welcomed their first home victory for a month, which should have been more emphatic.
The Premier League's top scorer Steve Cowan led the line effectively although uncharacteristically he missed one superb chance early on in the match.
As it was defender Gordon Rae pushed forward to take advantage of Dundee's hesitancy at the back to grab the vital goal-just his second of the season.
Cowan's early opportunity to put Hibs in front came after 14 minutes. Rae's clearance was completely missed by Duffy but when Cowan sped into the box he directed his shot a foot wide from eight yards.
Dundee's only encouragement from an ineffective first 45 minutes was Stuart Rafferty drive two minutes from the interval, which flew a yard over Rough's cross bar.
Rough had to keep his concentration high in the 49th minute when a looping cross from Robert Connor on the left dipped just under the bar with John Brown racing in menacingly to challenge -but the Scotland man clutched the ball safely.
The goal that Hibs deserved on play arrived in the 62nd minute. Munro floated in a free kick from 30 yards and Cowan set up a scramble in front of Geddes with a neat head flick.
The ball fell to Paul Kane close to the line and when Rab Shannon flopped his shot it squirmed clear to Rae six yards out who drove the ball low behind Geddes at the far post.
